For true watch aficionados owning watches is for some like owning handbags..you can’t have just one, in fact it’s all about building a collection of watches that work across all needed occasions (just like those handbags).
It is about building up a much loved collection of designers from the best of brands, those who move both design and ?? forward. But what happens when you fall in love with a specific face or specific technology? the answer…buy it in every colour (just like a bag then) or take the opportunity Rado have put forward. Take one watch and give it to six different product designers asking each to apply their individual style to this much sought-after watch family. So here are six watches from the True collection by six designers none of whom work ordinarily with watches.
Additionally while we were here they are a few other brands to enjoy who present the same styling but in different colour-ways and finishes, so if in doubt you can always get the same watch in a different finish
RADO – TRUE CYCLO
Philippe Nigro, the French award-winning furniture designer, has put his signature in RADO’s new limited collection of watches. His minimalistic identity can be seen in the simple design of the watch. The matt black and silver surfaces with the silver-coloured dial add a delicate and refined note to the watch. “I decided to use high-tech ceramic material with a black matt appearance to allow the watch to express itself. I found that this combination expresses all the elegance, organic qualities and technology of the material,” Nigro explains. The clean and simple design of the watch offers an everlasting beauty which is going to transcend time and become a classic piece. “There is something very reassuring about wearing an automatic wrist-watch – a purely mechanical object. The attachment encourages a sense of intimacy and creates a strong emotional bond with the object.”
RADO – TRUE BLAZE
“One of the young interior designers to watch” according to Vogue, American interior designer Sam Amoia collaborated with Rado to design a dazzling watch which creates a disco ball feeing on the wrist. The uniqueness of this watch is found in its dial as its textured metallic structure is created using the process that replicates the crystalline structure of diamond powder. Despite its glittering and ravishing appearance, the watch is able to maintain a minimalistic feel thanks to the unique placement of the gold-colored logo and indexes which are a classic feature of Rado. “The result is an understated and innovative piece. Not of the traditional canon watches but something interesting and special, yet simple and timeless,” Amoia adds.
RADO – TRUE FACE
“I’m always experiencing a lack of time, yet still needing to create, aiming for something unique and timeless,” like Polish designer Oskar Zieta, many people chase time while looking for inspiration in everyday life. Zieta’s True Face watch carries this uniqueness that can only be found in his creations, such as his ‘plopp’ stools. The watch consists of satin-finish neutral tone case and bracelet and a scratch resistance high-gloss metallic dial polished in order to achieve a captivating reflective finish. The final touch is found on the underside of the matt grey hands as they were given a rose gold-colored finish. Zieta created True Face in order “to be noticed and to exude respect for precious materials. These values create a positive connotation on the wrist.”
RADO – TRUE SHADOW
“God is in the details” said Ludwig Miels van der Rohe and Japanese fashion designer Kunihiko Moringa, known for his pixelated collection, could not agree more. Thus, he collaborated with Rado to create a watch whose details will bring out a divine beauty. His fashion collections play on light and color using photochromic fabrics to create illusions to the eye. What makes True Shadow special is its play with light. When sunlight hits the dial, it goes dark, yet, when the sun goes down the dial fades and becomes transparent revealing a skeleton watch. “The idea was to add color and to take it away,” Moringa explains. “I tried to capture the ‘floating’ essence of time in the design of a watch,” and he succeeded in a design which seizes both light and dark – day and night.
RADO – TRUE PHOSPHO
Swiss watches are considered an eternal present which is passed down the generations. This is why the Swiss design studio Big-Game, which produces products and accessories for well-known companies, created a new simple yet functional watch. The black brass dial of True Phospho is perforated, allowing the Swiss automatic movement below shine through. The watch also features luminescent indexes while the hour and minute hands are tipped with Super-LumiNova, and the second hand is fully coated in the glow-in-the-dark substance. “The key words of this project were minimalism and lightness, so we decided to make the design by removing material rather than by adding it,” the Big-Game designers explained. The watch is going to be limited to 1003 pieces – 1000 for the general public and one for each of the designers.
RADO – TRUE STRATUM
“I tried to re-question, in a subtle way, how time is displayed by introducing an element of three-dimensionality on the dial. The appearance of the dial changes constantly depending on the light,
always creating new reflections and gradients,”
Austrian designer Rainer Mutsch explains about his collaboration with Rado. He created True Stratum, a watch whose black dial features delicate, asymmetrically arranged descending steps that emphasise the three dimensionality of the concave surface. The addition of the matt rhodium hour and minute hands and a yellow second hand provides a pop of colour, as well as, easy readability. Finally, more depth is created with a perfectly centered black dot metallised on the underside of the sapphire crystal which hovers over and casts its shadow on the dial.
